Symrise Launches PEG-Free Solubilizer
Cosmetics manufacturers may use newly launched SymSol PF-3 to solubilize lipophilic substances — such as perfume and essential oils, actives and vitamins — in pure aqueous and aqueous alcoholic product formulations. PEG-containing products currently dominate all price levels of the solubilizer market, with Polyethylene glycol (PEG) compounds having served as emulsifiers, solubilizers and surfactants in cosmetic preparations for many years. However, a trend for PEG-free products has recently seen rapid growth — and has now been addressed by Symrise.
SymSol PF-3 offers more than simply being PEG-free; it may be used in many kinds of fragrance, hair or body care applications. The solubilizer allows a clear solution of oil soluble substances in pure aqueous and aqueous alcoholic product formulations, is easy to handle as a result of being cold processable, colourless and clearly soluble in water. It does not exert an influence on the colour or odour of the final formulation, leaves a pleasant skin feel and, moreover, can be used as an emulsifier or co-emulsifier in O/W formulations. SymSol PF-3 displays an excellent performance compared with its benchmark, PEG-containing products and other PEG-free solubilizers, a unique performance that is achieved by combining anionic surfactants and Hydrolite 5. In addition, it also excels against other PEG-free solubilizers in cost efficiency, colour and odour. To prove the efficacy of this new substance, numerous studies were conducted — one of which involved a comparison with the PEG benchmark and another to other PEG-free solubilizers — in the solubilization of essential oils and perfume oils. Rolf Ohrmann, global product manager, believes that the way in which SymSol PF-3 “combines both a PEG-free formulation and the performance of a standard PEG-containing product,” provides customers with a unique advantage.
